Situated on the right banks of river Bhagirathi, Uttarkashi town is the headquarters of the district by the same name. It is a popular tourist destination and pilgrimage center. With trekking and mountaineering gaining popularity, Uttarkashi has emerged as major base for exploring Gangotri Valley. Uttarkashi, like Varanasi, is known as a site for Hindu pilgrimage. Vishwanath temple is a major tourist attraction. The temple has a magnificent trishul or trident, one meter in circumference and made of copper. It supports a trident four meters long. Each prong is about two meters in length. Also Uttarkashi is known for its temples dedicated to Rishi Parasurama, Datatryea, Goddess Annapurna Devi, Goddess Kali, and Bhairon. There are close to 365 temples in this town.
